Working in Marathon

We work Marathon regularly, mostly around US 1, the Overseas Highway, through Key Vaca and the neighboring keys, the Seven Mile Bridge at the west end, and the Boot Key Harbor waterfront.

Marathon is a city in the middle of the chain, far enough down that the Seven Mile Bridge sits at one end of it and a long run of smaller bridges at the other. It is the working center of the Middle Keys, with a harbor, an airport and real municipal infrastructure on coral rock, and everything hauled off this island travels the entire highway to get to a mainland facility.

Who calls us here

Harbor and marine industry, hotel and restaurant kitchens, hospital and municipal facilities, and the commercial operations that serve the middle of the chain.

What we run in Marathon

Marathon is the working heart of the Middle Keys and the job mix is broader here than anywhere else on the highway. Harbor and marine industry brings separator service, bilge and washdown recovery and drain work where the water is right there. Hotel and restaurant kitchens run steady trap and jetting service, and hospital and municipal facilities add the kind of institutional work that has to happen on schedule regardless of what season it is. Because this is a city with real infrastructure on coral rock, excavation matters here more than up the chain: utility exposure, potholing and daylighting before anybody opens a street, done with water rather than a bucket because what is under that shoulder is packed tight and shallow.

Getting a truck in

This is the longest haul we run and tank capacity governs the entire day. Everything we pump on this island rides back up the whole highway, so we size the work to the truck, stage carefully and plan the return before the first hose comes off the reel. The Seven Mile Bridge at the west end and the bridge runs to the east mean a loaded tanker has no alternate route at all. On the island, harbor approaches are cramped and shared with boat trailers and yard equipment, so a reverse near a bulkhead gets a spotter every time. Highway shoulder work is coned and lit, because traffic here does not slow down for anybody.

Through the year

Winter into spring fills the hotels, the harbor and the restaurants, and the highway with them, so we come early and run tighter intervals through those months. Summer is hot, quieter and genuinely useful, and it is when the jetting, separator work and municipal structure cleaning gets done properly. Storm season sets the real posture here. In the middle of the chain, with bridges on both sides and one road, preparation is done long before anything is forecast, and after weather passes we run as long as it takes, which is what being open every day of the year is for.

Marathon sits in Monroe County, and everything on this page runs out of our yard in Miami. See the rest of Monroe or look at the trucks working.

One call covers both halves of the job in Marathon

There are plenty of capable vacuum companies and plenty of capable excavation companies. What is rare in Marathon is one outfit that does both, off one roster of trucks, under one set of permits. That was a deliberate choice rather than an accident of how the company grew.

Take a blocked kitchen line. Clearing it is a jetting job. Finding out why it keeps blocking can mean exposing the lateral, and if that lateral runs under a finished surface next to other buried services, the digging is the careful part. Those are usually two vendors and two schedules. Here they are one visit.

The same logic runs the other way. A restaurant with a line that keeps blocking has a jetting problem and a trap interval problem, and treating either one alone means doing it again in a few months. Because the crew that clears the line is the crew that services the trap, the conversation covers both instead of stopping at the edge of somebody’s scope.

What you get in writing

Every environmental service in Marathon generates a manifest showing what came out and where it went, before and after photographs, and disposal records from an approved facility. That file is what an inspector asks for, and it is the reason the haulers permit and the dumping permit matter rather than being background detail.

On the excavation side the deliverable is different but the principle is the same. An exposed utility gets measured for depth and offset, identified by size and material, and photographed, so the drawing can be corrected before a trench crew corrects it the expensive way. Everything we run is available across this area, and telling us the job is the fastest way to find out which part of it you actually need.

Around the clock

Something failed tonight in Marathon. Somebody answers.

Struck line, blocked kitchen drain, a basin backing up in the middle of a storm. We run every day of the year, and the phone reaches a person rather than a queue. This company is first responder owned, and the emergency side of it works the way that suggests.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Do you charge extra to come out to Marathon?

Marathon is inside the area we run. Tell us the job and we will tell you plainly whether it makes sense for us to be the ones doing it.

How fast can you get a truck to Marathon?

Depends what is already running and where you are. Call and you will get a real answer rather than a maybe. We run every day of the year.

Do you service both restaurants and construction sites in Marathon?

Both. Grease traps and cooking oil on one side, excavation and utility work on the other, out of the same yard.

Do you work nights here?

Regularly. Most kitchen work in Marathon happens after close, and a lot of utility work has to happen off-peak.

What paperwork do we get?

Manifests, disposal records and photos on the environmental side, and measured, photographed utility records on the excavation side.

Where the trucks go

Grease and drainage work runs out to about 150 miles from the yard. Hydro excavation travels further, statewide when a job calls for it.
