Working in Miami

We work Miami regularly, mostly around Brickell, downtown along Flagler, Wynwood and the Design District, and the Calle Ocho stretch of SW 8th Street.

Downtown and Brickell are about as congested underground as Florida gets. Layered utility corridors under narrow rights of way, oolitic limestone not far down, and a water table that turns any open hole into a wet one. It is the textbook argument for cutting with water instead of steel.

Restaurant and bar kitchens by the hundred, hotel and high-rise amenity kitchens, hospital and campus food service, and the utility and telecom crews working the same congested corridors.

What we run in Miami

This is home, and the work here runs both sides of the business hard. Grease traps in Brickell towers and along Flagler get pumped on tight intervals because the kitchens never really stop. Out in Wynwood and the Design District we are jetting lines in buildings that were warehouses before they were restaurants, so the drain runs are older than the menus. On the excavation side, downtown is where potholing earns its keep. A telecom or utility crew needs a line found under a sidewalk with four other services stacked around it, and a backhoe there is a bad idea. We open the hole with water, show them what is down there, and put it back. Same trucks, same night, different job.

Getting a truck in

Downtown staging is the real work. Loading zones, valet lanes, event traffic and one-way grids all decide when a tanker can sit. Brickell and Flagler kitchens mostly get serviced overnight or early morning, before the sidewalk fills up. High-rise traps often sit in a back-of-house corridor or a loading dock level, so hose runs get long and building engineering needs a heads up. Wynwood alleys are narrow and half of them are blocked by the time the bars open. We plan around the I-95 and 836 ramps rather than through them, and on event nights downtown we either come early or come very late.

Through the year

Wet season runs May into October and downtown storm inlets take a beating from paved runoff with nowhere else to go. That is when catch basin calls stack up. Hurricane season pushes property managers to get basins cleared before a named storm shows on the map, and after one passes we are pulling debris out of inlets for weeks. Restaurant volume climbs from late fall through the spring with visitors and conventions, which shortens grease trap intervals. Summer slows the dining rooms a little, which is the right window for scheduled maintenance instead of emergency calls.

One call covers both halves of the job in Miami

There are plenty of capable vacuum companies and plenty of capable excavation companies. What is rare in Miami is one outfit that does both, off one roster of trucks, under one set of permits. That was a deliberate choice rather than an accident of how the company grew.

A new catch basin is the clearest example. Setting the structure is drainage work, but the hole it goes into sits at the low point of a lot, which is exactly where irrigation, lighting conduit and sleeves tend to run. Somebody has to expose those before a bucket finds them. Splitting that across two companies is how a one day job becomes a three week one.

The same logic runs the other way. A restaurant with a line that keeps blocking has a jetting problem and a trap interval problem, and treating either one alone means doing it again in a few months. Because the crew that clears the line is the crew that services the trap, the conversation covers both instead of stopping at the edge of somebody’s scope.

What you get in writing

Every environmental service in Miami generates a manifest showing what came out and where it went, before and after photographs, and disposal records from an approved facility. That file is what an inspector asks for, and it is the reason the haulers permit and the dumping permit matter rather than being background detail.

On the excavation side the deliverable is different but the principle is the same. An exposed utility gets measured for depth and offset, identified by size and material, and photographed, so the drawing can be corrected before a trench crew corrects it the expensive way. Everything we run is available across this area, and telling us the job is the fastest way to find out which part of it you actually need.
