What we run in West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach is a two-shift town for us. The grease side runs downtown, where the Clematis and Rosemary Square kitchens sit shoulder to shoulder and the interceptors are usually out back off an alley. Convention and hotel banquet kitchens produce in bursts, so we pump those on a schedule built around their event calendar instead of a flat interval. The excavation side lives out along Okeechobee Boulevard and the corridors feeding the airport, where somebody always needs a utility exposed before they trench. Northwood Village and the older residential districts are where potholing earns its keep, because the drawings behind those mature streets are older than the crews reading them. We also jet a fair number of lines that back up long before anybody thought to call.

Getting a truck in

Downtown work here is night work, and we plan for it. The alleys behind Clematis are tight enough that a tanker takes the lane and the hose does the rest of the walking, so we lay out cones, keep a clear path for anybody coming out a back door, and get gone before the morning deliveries start. Rosemary Square has garage decks with low clearance, which means staging on the street and running longer hose. Okeechobee Boulevard is fine off peak and miserable at rush hour. Anything near the airport or the convention center gets checked against what is booked that week, because a full house changes every approach in the neighborhood.

Through the year

Downtown gets loud from late fall through spring, when the season crowd and the convention calendar overlap and kitchen volume climbs. Traps that hold fine in August need shorter intervals in February. Summer flips it: quieter kitchens, but afternoon storms nearly every day, which is when catch basins downtown and around the older neighborhoods show whether anybody cleaned them. We push basin work into late spring on purpose. Storm season also brings the calls at two in the morning, and we answer those, because that is the part of the job that never had a season.
