The campuses are straightforward once you know the service roads, though we stay off them at class change and we clear our arrival with facilities. Agricultural and equestrian properties are the interesting ones. Private drives can be shell or packed dirt, and a loaded tanker on soft ground is how you spend an afternoon getting a truck out, so we walk the approach before we commit the weight. Low gates, overhead branches and livestock all figure in. Griffin Road and Davie Road are the arteries and both back up around the campuses. Canal-side properties often leave a narrow strip between the drive and the water, and we work off the firm side.
Through the year
Wet season turns soft drives into a real decision about whether the truck goes in today, and it also loads up the swales and culverts on the agricultural side with washed sediment. That is the busiest stretch for drainage calls out here. Campus kitchen volume follows the academic year, heavy in fall and spring and noticeably quiet through the summer, which is when we get the big preventive jetting done. Storm prep on the horse properties means clearing culverts so paddocks drain.
